What Identity Thieves Hope to Find When They Steal Your Wallet

What Identity Thieves Hope to Find When They Steal Your Wallet
A stolen wallet can expose more than cash and payment cards. Leaving your Social Security card, PIN notes, and unnecessary personal documents at home can reduce the information a thief gets in one grab – Shutterstock

A wallet thief might care less about the cash than the small collection of personal details tucked behind it. A driver’s license, a debit card, an insurance card, and a few scraps of paper can give a criminal several ways to cause trouble long after the wallet disappears.

What identity thieves really want is a useful combination of information, access, and opportunity. A stolen credit card might support an immediate shopping spree, while an identification card or document containing personal information could help someone impersonate its owner. Not every wallet theft leads to identity theft, but the contents can make the difference between an inconvenient afternoon and a much longer cleanup.
