How tie-breakers work at the Tour de France

Jonas Vingegaard and Tadej Pogacar were practically in a dead heat at the 2023 Tour de France.

The Tour de France can be one of the most closely contested races in the entire sport of cycling or it can be a massive blow-out. What happens in the unlikely event the race ends with two or more riders finishing the race in the exact same amount of time?

The 2024 Tour de France ended in a blow-out, with Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) winning by over six minutes, but the situation was much tighter in 2023 when Pogačar was trailing defending champion Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) by just 10 seconds before the Danish rider carved out a much more generous margin in the stage 16 time trial.
