What happens at Queen Elizabeth II's private service at Windsor after state funeral?

Queen Elizabeth II’s state funeral started at 11am following a short procession by the Royal gun carriage.

The service itself, led by King Charles III, will last no more than an hour, with it finishing at 12pm.

At this time, there will be a two-minute silence held across the country.

This isn’t the end of the day’s events though, as processions and services will be ongoing until the evening.

Not all of it is for public access though, with the final events being reserved for the Royal Family only.

Here is a breakdown of today’s events and the importance of Queen Elizabeth II's private service.

After the funeral service is complete at 12pm, a procession will take the coffin to Wellington Arch at 1pm.

The Queen’s coffin will be transferred from the Royal gun carriage to the state hearse.

From here, it will travel to Windsor up the Long Walk to St George’s Chapel around 3pm.

From 3.10pm, there will be another procession led by a dismounted attachment of the Household Cavalry.

The Royal Family will then join the procession at 3.40pm in the Quadrangle at Windsor Castle.

Once the procession is complete, there will be a Committal service with around 800 people, including the Queen's Household and Windsor estate staff.

During this service, the Queen’s coffin will be lowered into the Royal Vault.

This is expected to end around 4.30pm.

At 7.30pm, the burial service will take place, but this will be a deeply personal ceremony and therefore be entirely private.

It is during the Queen’s private service when the coffin will be officially buried.

The earth that will be scattered on the coffin will have been gathered from Frogmore’s royal mausoleum.

Here, the monarch will be buried alongside her father, King George VI at the King George VI memorial chapel.

Precisely, she will be buried in a small annex of the chapel, in the same location her sister, Princess Margaret’s ashes are kept.

Prince Philip, who died in 2021 at the age of 99, will be buried alongside the Queen.

Can you watch Queen Elizabeth II's private service on TV?

Every event in today’s proceedings will be televised until 5pm.

The Committal service will be shown on TV, including by the BBC, but the private ceremony will be kept behind closed doors.

The public will not be permitted access to the burial service as this is strictly for family only.
