Netflix is documenting the story of Hunter Moore, aka the King of Revenge Porn, in The Most Hated Man on the Internet.
The docuseries dropped today, Wednesday, July 27, with the events being told over the course of three episodes.
Hunter was lurking online in the early 2010s, with the man declaring himself a “life ruiner” by creating the revenge porn hub known as IsAnyoneUp.com.
The website allowed users to upload photos of mainly women, ex-girlfriends, that were perceived to have wronged them in the past.
Thankfully, his twisted tale eventually came to a close, with the documentary exploring his rise and fall.
Who is Hunter Moore?
Hunter lived in California, quickly gaining infamy as ‘the most hated man on the internet’, hence the documentary’s name.
It was actually Rolling Stone that first referred to him as this after his website gained national attention in the US.
The website was not only used as a way to share explicit content of former partners or people, but it also dropped names, addresses and personal information onto the platform.
When people came to Hunter asking for their information to be removed, as it was almost always added without consent, he would refuse.
It was something he appeared to enjoy, as he crowned himself as “a professional life ruiner”.
The website went live in 2010 and ran for 16 months before it was eventually taken down.
What happened to Hunter Moore?
When the website was live, Hunter consistently proclaimed he had done nothing wrong, as it fell under the same rules as other social media platforms such as Facebook.
However, his downfall began when a woman named Kayla Law requested for her images to be removed from the website, which he once again refused to do.
Kayla’s mother, Charlotte Law, got involved and took action against him.
At first, the police didn’t take her requests to investigate him seriously, but it didn’t stop her from trying.
Through the help of a former marine, James McGibney, the FBI got involved, prompting an official investigation.
Once the website was down, Hunter sold it to an anti-bullying group, though it did little to help him.
In 2015, he pleaded guilty to charges for “aggravated identity theft and aiding and abetting in the unauthorised access of a computer."
He was sentenced to two years and six months in prison, and additionally ordered to pay a fine of $2000 (£1,664) and a restitution fee of $145.70 (£122).
In May 2017, Hunter was released from prison and has stayed off the radar ever since.
According to Netflix, he initially agreed to take part in the documentary, but pulled out later on for unknown reasons.
