What happened in Grace's last series? ITV drama returns for third run as John Simm leads cast

A new series of Grace kicks off on Sunday, but many ITV viewers had one issue - they couldn't remember what happened in the last one.

It was back in 2001 that Grace, the crime drama adapted from Peter James' hit novels, made its debut with former Life on Mars and The Lakes actor John Simm in the lead role of famous fictional detective Roy Grace. Grace's first ever episode left viewers mightily unnerved as it centered on the disappearance of a man on his stag do who, unbeknown to his loved ones, ended being buried alive by his so called mates in a sick prank that then took a sinister turn when, a straw put in a hole for him to be use as a breathing tube, was pulled out of the ground by an unknown assailant.

Series 2 of Grace aired on ITV last year and was just as grisly as the first, with its final episode concerned with the discovery of a body dredged up from the sea, with both of the person's eyes missing. After two more bodies were found, also with body parts missing, Grace drew the conclusion that they were dealing with a trade of human organs.

Investigations led to the discovery of an operation underway on the south coast, in which migrants were being promised a better life if they passed compulsory medical tests. However, the 'tests' were a ruse to find out if they were a good match for organ donations and, if they were, they were killed and their organs taken.

The scheme, masterminded by criminal Joe Baker, involved a number of others, including boat owner Jim Telby.

Throughout the series finale viewers followed the story of Layla Bakchurts, who was desperate to find a liver for her daughter at any cost, only for her to be left in a state of shock when told where the liver would be coming from.

While Callie did end up getting a liver all above aboard through the NHS, her mum faced a custodial sentence for trying to trying to illegally purchase a liver from the criminals.

At the very end of series 2's last episode, Roy Grace, having decided to have missing wife Sandy legally declared dead, receives a call that she may have been seen alive in Germany.

The debut of Grace series three comes as the stage show of Peter James' thriller Wish You Were Dead ended its run in Newcastle, with a cast including Giovanna Fletcher.
