What Father Christmas would look like in 2022 - and it's pretty disturbing

Father Christmas is known worldwide for his big red suit and fluffy beard but that could all be about to change. For years, Santa has been famous for the same festive look after a makeover in the Victorian era saw the big guy swap his green get-up to a red number.

However, researchers keen to find out how Santa would look in 2022 have switched up his look again - and the results are bizarre.

Using Google search data to figure out the most popular clothing items, accessories and presents of the year, the branding experts over at Custom Planet reimagined Mr Claus' iconic outfit for the 21st century.

Fair warning, you best prepare yourself. After all, even Santa's most devoted fans would be shocked to see him coming down the chimney in football boots. Anyone lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the illusive fella on Christmas Eve might see just that if this data is anything to go by.

Father Christmas' new look is certainly different, as a cartoonist has reimagined his outfit from head to toe. Starting at the top, say goodbye to Santa's signature head gear. Instead, he's been gifted a bucket hat - one of the trendiest head-warmers going this year.

Paired with the hat, which brings in 87,000 searches per month, Santa needs a jacket to keep him warm. Keen to give him the best of the best, the experts opted for a cosy puffer. In lieu of a big red coat, the data suggests that today, Santa should instead wear a puffer jacket, perhaps favouring the cosy but practical design.

Sticking to the focus on comfort, Santa's next swap is his cargo pants. While less traditional and much less formal than his usual red trousers, cargo pants may be useful for transporting gifts considering the abundance of pockets most designs feature. Typically sold in camouflage, they might help Santa stay hidden from excited children on Christmas Eve.

Next, Father Christmas needs some new shoes, and the toymaker must be a sports fan based on his footwear of choice: football boots. You can't blame him for wanting to try out what must be a popular gift, given there are 4,800,000 searches per month for football boots.

It's possible the spuds, or spikes, which are designed to provide grip on slippery turf, could also come in handy for walking in snow and on ice, even if Santa's reindeer do most of the legwork.

Talking of the reindeer, the big guy has also been given a transport upgrade. Back in the day, St Nick had limited choices. But in 2022 there's all sorts of motorised options available. So, the experts asked: what car would Santa drive? Well, the answer according to search data is not a car at all, but an electric scooter, based on 249,000 searches per month.

It's currently illegal to ride a privately owned scooter on public roads, cycle lanes, or pavements, so here's hoping the reindeer know how to lead a scooter through the sky.

After sorting out Santa's transport, which is arguably his most-needed upgrade, the designer topped off his look with a number of accessories and a new haircut. Influenced by trends, this year's Santa has a helix piercing, a butterfly tattoo, plus a tote bag. Oh, and he's opted for a goatee beard.
