What EA Sports and FIFA video game split means for Manchester United and Man City fans

Electronic Arts have revealed they will stop making FIFA branded football titles.

The decision comes after the two sides failed to strike an agreement to extend their three-decade-long partnership. EA Sports made their first FIFA branded video game in 1993 and they have been responsible for the popular franchise ever since.

Although that marriage with FIFA has now ended, EA will continue to make the profitable football video game. From 2023, The game will be known under the banner of EA Sports FC, but the core mechanics of the game are expected to remain unchanged.

Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester City and Liverpool are among the clubs that have confirmed they'll be in the new game, but Manchester United are yet to confirm on social media, which could be a concern for supporters.

David Jackson, vice president at EA Sports, insisted that the change will be positive following the announcement.

"The world of football and the world of entertainment are changing, and they clash within our product," Jackson told the BBC.

"In the future our players will demand of us the ability to be more expansive in that offering. At the moment, we engage in play as a primary form of interactive experience. Soon, watching and creating content are going to be equally as important for fans.

"Under the licensing conventions that we had agreed with Fifa 10 years ago, there were some restrictions that weren't going to allow us to be able to build those experiences for players."
