What do nr, sfs, jw, bmt, sta, ml, pu and wyll mean? Snapchat acronyms uncoded

Snapchat is a mobile application which allows users to instantly connect with other Snapchatters around the world by sending messages, photos and videos. It has grown in popularity since its launch in 2011, with its number of users increasing year on year.

The app currently boasts 363m daily active users worldwide, according to Snapchat’s own data. It also reported an average of more than 5bn snaps created every day in 2020.

It is particularly popular amongst Gen Z, who often communicate using an array of acronyms. Gone are the days when just a simple LOL or ROFL would suffice – it now feels like you have to be skilled in codebreaking just to have a conversation on the app.

If you are chatting with someone on Snapchat and have no idea what they mean by SFS or WYLL, then we have you covered. Here we help you explain the meaning of acronyms used on Snapchat.

NR

One of the simpler acronyms, NR simply means ‘no reply’. It is used across social media to indiciate you will not reply to comments or messages.

SFS

This one can have several meanings, the first being ‘snap for snap’. This means you want another user to share your Snapchat story in a bid to reach as many people as possible.

It can also mean ‘shout-out for shout-out’, which is used when you want other users to promote your profile on the app. Giving a user a shout-out means sharing their username on your account to help them get more friends on the app.

Another meaning for SFS is ‘spam for spam’. Though the word spam is typically associated with unwanted mail, for many social media users spam can be a good thing.

Spamming a user usually means engaging with their content by liking and commenting as much as possible. Therefore, ‘Spam for spam’ is a means of improving your engagement and widening your audience on Snapchat by spamming another user’s content who will in turn spam yours.

JW

JW simply means ‘just wondering’. It is typically used to follow up a question, just as it would be in a real conversation.

BMT

BMT usually stands for ‘biting my tongue’. This indicates that a user is resisting the urge to say something potentially confrontational or controversial.

It could also mean ‘big man ting’ – a phrase which originates in Jamaican vernacular – meaning ‘big man thing’. It is typically used to describe something that is cool, or is for particularly cool people only.

STA

If a user says STA, it means they want to ‘send to all’. This is when you want to send something on Snapchat – a message, photo, or video – to multiple users at once.

ML

This one typically means ‘much love’, and is used as a statement of affection at the end of a conversation with a close friend or family member.

PU

PU is short for ‘pop up’, which essentially means you want someone to message you on Snapchat.

WYLL

WYLL means ‘what you look like’, and is used to ask for a photo or video to see what someone looks like. If someone asks WYLL, many people prefer to send their Bitmoji – a digital avatar – rather an an image of themselves.
