What Diogo Jota told Joe Gomez before Liverpool goal against Watford

The prospect of sweeping the board with major trophies is keeping Liverpool hit-man Diogo Jota focused after he reached a significant milestone in his blossoming career.

The versatile forward notched his 20th goal of the season in The Reds' 2-0 Premier League victory against Watford at Anfield on Saturday - the first time he has scored 20 times in a top flight season.

But with Liverpool still fighting for the Premier League crown as well as the Champions League and the FA Cup, the 25-year-old can see even greater achievements on the horizon.

Speaking after the win against Watford on Saturday, Jota said: “It’s the first time in my career that I reach 20, but I have to just keep on going because we still have plenty to play for. If I am on the pitch I am always able to find at least an opportunity to score, so it is up to me to stay focused and take those chances. And, well, I’ve been opening the scoring this season and that is the hardest thing, and I am really happy for that and I hope I can keep doing that.”

The forward's comments about scoring the first goal in matches are backed up by his own statistics. Jota has scored 13 opening goals in matches this season - no player in English football has scored more.

The Portuguese international has proven to be adept at scoring goals with his head and added another one to his collection with an instinctive nudged finish against the Hornets. But on this occasion it wasn't assist king Trent Alexander-Arnold providing the delivery, but Joe Gomez.

An appreciative Jota added: “It was about the run, yes, but also the cross. I just had to get a touch on the ball because the cross was really good. I spoke with Joey before the game, and I said: 'You are going to get an assist today!' He had a few crosses at Nottingham which I didn’t get on the end of, but I was confident for today.”
