Martin O'Neill says Celtic principal shareholder Dermot Desmond allows his managers full control to run the club's football department
The Parkhead CEO is someone fans rarely hear from but he's always a key instigator when it comes to big decisions for the Premiership champions. His most recent boss appointment was Ange Postecoglou back in the summer of 2021 and O'Neill says the Irishman made next to no interference when it came to football matters during his time at the club.
It's changed days since the 70-year-old's appointment as manager in 2000 but he tells Open Goal that Desmond uses plenty of of delegation tactics in Glasgow. He explained: "I think what happened in the first place is that when Dermot Desmond gave me the job, he actually said to me 'I want you to take ownership of the football club.' By that, he meant run the football club as he might have one of his business managers doing something for him.
"Of course that gave me great confidence that he wanted me to do that, and from top to bottom, I wanted to be in charge. It was as simple as that. I think nowadays in the current game, some managers don't even sign the players. When I'm talking senior players coming into the football club, I wanted to sign them."
