What Dan Burn's £13m Newcastle transfer means for Tottenham and Joe Rodon ahead of deadline day

Brighton and Hove Albion are aiming to pull off a last minute swoop for Spurs centre-half Joe Rodon, as Dan Burn's Seagulls exit opens up opportunity for regular minutes for the Welshman.

Rodon, 24, has featured in a grand total of five games in all competitions under Antonio Conte and Nuno Espirito Santo combined as the centre-half now considers his options ahead of the imminent deadline day.

With Spurs set to sign no new central defenders before the window slams shut coupled with Cristian Romero's soon-to-be return from injury, everything indicates that an exit would suit the former Swansea man who needs game time to keep up his international pedigree.

And Burn's situation with Newcastle United has allowed Graham Potter and co to consider a late swoop for Spurs' number 33, who is behind all of Davinson Sanchez, Eric Dier, Japhet Tanganga and Romero in the pecking order in north London.

As per our sister title Chronicle Live, The Toon have had a £13million offer accepted with the 6ft 7in defender travelling north for a medical ahead of deadline day.

With no centre-half targets being touted for a late transfer to N17 by Fabio Paratici, it is unknown how the club would react to potentially losing their back up defender but the stance from the player is clear for all to see.

football.london understands that the out of favour international is keen on a move out of Spurs, on loan or permanently, to get game time and there are some suggestions that if, as expected, Newcastle are to complete the Burn deal, then this could result in late action between Spurs and Brighton.

The irony of the situation being that the two sides meet in the FA Cup next weekend meaning that if the transfer was to be permanent, Rodon's first clash could be against his former side.

Despite the lack of appearances this season, manager Conte had praised the 'commitment' of the defender and referenced the difficulties with finding him the opportunities to play in spite of Romero's injury.

"The first thing that I'm trying to do – and am doing – is try to find the right position for every player, and in every position is to have another player," Conte explained at the start of December 2021.

"For in the characteristic in my idea, I see Joe behind Eric Dier in the central position. For sure this position is a singular position. If you’re a central defender on the right or the left, you can have more options to play.

"To stay behind the central defender, you have only one option but Joe is a player who has showed me really, really great commitment, a will and desire to learn and improve himself.

"I think this is good. It's a really good example for the other players. He’s a silent player that works and works because he knows that he wants to improve. I’m satisfied for the improvement that I’m seeing in the training sessions about him."

On the incoming side of things, it is looking highly likely that Paratici's Juve connections could help to save the transfer window amid Luis Diaz and Adama Traore blows, as the Lilywhites close in on a double swoop for Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur.

Sofyan Amrabat could also sign if a deal can be agreed with Fiorentina swiftly in these last knockings of the transfer period but the outgoing situation could be just as busy and the Rodon conundrum is an example of this.
