- France came out victorious in their only previous FIFA World Cup encounter with Australia, winning 2-1 in their opening fixture of the 2018 edition. The match produced two penalties – both converted – and an own goal.
- Australia’s only victory against France came in the 2001 FIFA Confederations Cup – they won 1-0 in Daegu, South Korea, thanks to a Clayton Zane goal. The other four meetings produced three French victories and a draw.
- France have qualified for their 16th FIFA World Cup. It’s their seventh appearance in a row, their longest ever run of participations.
- Since 1998, France have reached the final of the FIFA World Cup in three of the six editions (1998, 2006, 2018), more than any other nation in this time.
- Current holders France will attempt to become the third team to win back-to-back FIFA World Cups after Italy (1934-1938) and Brazil (1958-1962). However, the last three World Cup defending champions have been knocked out in the group stages (Italy 2010, Spain 2014, Germany 2018).
- The reigning world champions have won their opening match in just three of the last 12 editions of the FIFA World Cup (D4 L5) – Germany in 1994, and Brazil in both 1998 and 2006.
- This is Australia’s sixth appearance at the FIFA World Cup. The only time the Socceroos have progressed to the knockout stages was in 2006 – they were knocked out by eventual winners Italy in the round of 16.
- Australia have kept only one clean sheet in their 16 FIFA World Cup matches, that came 48 years ago with a goalless draw against Chile in the group stages of the 1974 edition.
- Australia’s last three goals at the FIFA World Cup have all come from the penalty spot and have all been scored by Mile Jedinak. Tim Cahill is the last Australian player to score from open play at the tournament, it was in 2014 against the Netherlands.
- Since the start of the 2014 FIFA World Cup, Cristiano Ronaldo is the only European player to have scored and assisted more goals (17 in 18 games) than France’s Antoine Griezmann (15 in 23 games) at major international tournaments (World Cup and European Championship combined).
- This is Didier Deschamps’ fifth consecutive major tournament as France head-coach, a record for the nation. He is part of a group of three to win the World Cup both as player and manager after Mário Zagallo and Franz Beckenbauer – he captained France to victory in 1998, playing in six of his team’s seven games, before lifting the trophy as manager in 2018.
