What Cesar Azpilicueta did to Arsenal after scoring as Thiago Silva sets Chelsea record in loss

If Chelsea's first half against Crystal Palace at Wembley was dull, the opening period against Arsenal was in complete contrast. Four goals, suspect defending and very open midfield - exciting for the neutral but less reassuring for those of a Blue persuasion.

Thomas Tuchel's backline without the presence of Antonio Rudiger and Thiago Silva was less than secure, and it was little surprise to see the Brazilian enter the fray at half-time. Cesar Azpilicueta and Timo Werner had equalised following goals from Emile Smith Rowe and Eddie Nketiah, respectively. The latter managed to earn the Gunners the lead for a third time after some very unconvincing Chelsea defending before Azpilicueta's clumsy defending bundled Bukayo Saka over late in the second half.

It is not the performance Tuchel would have wanted to see as the Blues recorded a third defeat in a row at Stamford Bridge. Nevertheless, we take a look at the moments you may have missed from west London below:

Mason Mount's edge

Mason Mount has proved imperious since Chelsea's win over Southampton, and he showed moments of that against the Gunners. The England international produced a beautiful crossfield pass for Marcos Alonso in the opening half before providing an assist for Azpilicueta's equaliser to continue to prove his ability to be involved in goals.

The 23-year-old showed some bite to his game on Wednesday evening, however, with a particularly strong challenge on Nuno Tavares before emphatically telling his opponent to get up, with some choice language. It was a tackle that may have been on the line of stronger punishment being required, but it was a rare moment of Chelsea showing some attitude against Arsenal on a night they lacked Antonio Rudiger's attitude and dominance.

What Cesar Azpilicueta did after scoring

It's not the first Azpilicueta has found the net this season, but it was the first time in the Premier League. The Spaniard's finish with his knee against Lille in the Champions League was going to take some beating, but the veteran looked very at home in the opposition box against Arsenal.

Lined up as Chelsea's wing-back with James once again in Chelsea's back three, Azpilicueta showed anyone doubting Tuchel's decision that he can provide a threat going forwards too. The Spaniard produced a perfectly timed run to the front post to dispatch Mount's clever pass with ease.

In celebration, the Blues captain tore off towards the Shed End and Arsenal's supporters before quickly kissing the Chelsea badge adorned on his chest and pumping his fist before producing high-fives with every player he passed as he ran back into position. Despite his contract extension, it still means an awful lot to the defender, even with an uncertain future.

Timo Werner appreciation

Werner is a player that Chelsea supporters have always appreciated despite his output. Stamford Bridge has often sung his name to reflect the shift he always produces even when the finishing hasn't matched. Of late, however, that support has been warranted on all fronts.

The German international netted once again against the Gunners, taking his tally to 11 for the season, just one behind his total number of goals during 2020/21. In fact, his strike against the Gunners made Werner Chelsea's leading scorer across all competitions, with Kai Havertz a single goal behind.

The chants fo 'Timo!' started for another moment, however, as he made a mazy dribble from deep inside of his own half. The comparisons to Eden Hazard were not far away on social media.

Thiago Silva breaks record

Thiago Silva set a Chelsea record against Arsenal, and one Tuchel probably hoped he could set later in what is remaining of the season. The Blues' defensive performance certainly warranted the Brazilian's introduction, however, with Christensen and Malang Sarr, in particular, struggling to withstand Arsenal's attacks.

The 37-year-old became the oldest outfield player to represent Chelsea in the Premier League, and while he's shown few signs of slowing down this season, the fact he started on the bench perhaps shows that Tuchel did want to give the former PSG star a rest. His introduction could not stem the flow of goals.
