Most drivers in Carlsbad have a corner they quietly dread. The city's own collision records show those instincts are often right. In its Local Roadway Safety Plan, completed in October 2022, the City of Carlsbad reviewed five years of police-reported collisions and identified the intersections where crashes happened most often. The findings point to wide, busy signals on the inland corridors and a few Village crossings where people on foot carry the most risk.
What Did Carlsbad's Collision Study Measure?
The study pulled records from the city's Crossroads collision database for January 2015 through December 2019. Analysts worked with 3,030 collisions, 1,683 of them involving an injury and 108 ending in a severe injury or death. Freeway crashes on I-5 sat outside the scope, since the plan covers city streets only.
Injury collisions split almost evenly between intersections (52 percent) and the stretches of road between them (48 percent). Severity told a different story. About 62 percent of severe and fatal crashes happened mid-block, often on four to six lane roads posted at 50 mph or higher.
Which Intersections Recorded the Most Crashes?
When city engineers ranked every intersection by injury collisions, ten locations rose to the top. The full breakdown appears in the City of Carlsbad's Local Roadway Safety Plan, which looked at both intersections and the road segments between them.

These totals cover the full five-year study window, not a single year. Read them as a guide to where crashes have tended to repeat, rather than as a current yearly count.
What Patterns Stand Out in the List?
Five of the ten intersections sit on El Camino Real, and three sit on Palomar Airport Road. Nine of the ten are signalized. Together, they account for roughly 15 percent of all intersection collisions in Carlsbad.
The more useful part of the study goes beyond the counts. For each problem location, engineers looked for a repeating crash type and matched it with a specific fix.
|
Location |
Main Crash Pattern Found |
Recommended Response |
|
El Camino Real & Palomar Airport Road |
Broadside crashes from drivers failing to stop at the limit line |
An overhead signal head for every through lane, high-visibility crosswalks |
|
Melrose Drive & Palomar Airport Road |
Broadside crashes, plus night crashes tied to speed and DUI |
Overhead signal heads, high-visibility crosswalks, advance stop bars |
|
Carlsbad Boulevard & State Street |
Impaired driving and crashes after dark |
Intersection lighting, targeted DUI enforcement |
|
El Camino Real & Alga Road |
Rear-end crashes from unsafe speed |
Overhead signal heads on the east and westbound approaches |
Broadside, or T-bone, crashes were the most common type at Carlsbad intersections overall. They showed up most at signals where at least one road carries four or six through lanes.
Why Is the State Street Roundabout an Outlier?
Seeing these locations plotted on an interactive Carlsbad accident map makes one of them stand apart. The Carlsbad Boulevard and State Street roundabout ranked third for total collisions, yet none of its 15 crashes caused a severe injury or death. The study credits a design meant to lower injury severity.
The issue there was behavior. Nine of the 15 crashes involved an impaired driver, and 14 happened at dusk, dawn or night. That is why the city's response focused on lighting and enforcement rather than a rebuild.
Where Do Pedestrians and Cyclists Face the Most Risk?
Pedestrian crashes gathered in the Village and along the coast. Roosevelt Street at Carlsbad Village Drive logged four pedestrian collisions, all with the driver at fault and all involving left turns. Carlsbad Boulevard at Hemlock Avenue also recorded four, again with drivers found at fault. The plan recommended curb extensions and advanced stop bars at the Village crossings.
For cyclists, Carlsbad Boulevard at Cerezo Drive topped the list with four bicycle collisions, each involving a northbound rider. Right-turning drivers were a recurring factor, and the plan called for advance flashing beacons, green bike lane paint and clearer sight lines there.
How Can Residents Put This Data to Use?
- Review the intersections on your regular commute and note which ones appear in the study.
- At large signals, pause a beat after your light turns green, since red-light running drives the broadside pattern.
- In the Village, make eye contact with left-turning drivers before stepping into a crosswalk.
- Treat the findings as context. The plan states that no location was identified as hazardous or requiring immediate attention.
Final Thoughts
Carlsbad's crash data shows patterns more than villains. Wide, fast signals on inland corridors produce the most collisions, while the Village concentrates pedestrian risk. Knowing where those patterns sit gives residents a clearer sense of where to slow down and why. Before your next drive across town, take a few minutes to check the intersections on your route and plan your turns with a little extra margin.
