ALPINE SKIIING
Women’s alpine combined _ Roni Remme, Toronto, fell in the downhill run and did not complete the event.
CURLING
Women _ Canada (Jennifer Jones, Kaitlyn Lawes, Jocelyn Peterman and Dawn McEwen, all Winnipeg; and Lisa Weagle, Ottawa) stole five points over the sixth and seventh ends as they won their final round-robin game 10-4 over Denmark. Despite having the same 5-4 record as Britain and Japan, Canada failed to advance to the semifinals as they lost the tiebreaker due to a poorer draw shot challenge score.
Men _ Canada (Brad Gushue, St. John’s, N.L.; Mark Nichols, Labrador City, N.L.; Brett Gallant, Charlottetown; and Geoff Walker, Beaverlodge, Alta.) lost their final round-robin game 5-2 to Britain and then fell 5-3 in the semifinals to Sweden when Gushue’s attempt to score two in the 10th end came up short in the rings. They will play the United States for the bronze medal.
FIGURE SKATING
Women _ Madeline Schizas, Oakville, Ont., placed 18th in the long program with 115.03 points and finished 19th overall (175.56).
FREESTYLE SKIING
Women’s halfpipe _ Rachael Karker, Erin, Ont., posted the second-highest score in qualifying with 89.50 points; Cassie Sharpe, Comox, B.C., was sixth (86.25); and Amy Fraser, Calgary, 11th (75.75) _ all advance to the finals.
Women’s ski cross _ Marielle Thompson, Whistler, B.C., won the silver medal, finishing 0.30 seconds behind the winner from Sweden; Brittany Phelan, Mont-Tremblant, Que.; Hannah Smith, Ottawa; and Courtney Hoffos, Windermere, B.C., swept the top three spots in the Small Final to finish fifth, sixth and seventh overall for the event.
Men’s halfpipe _ Brendan Mackay (87.25) and Noah Bowman (85.50), both Calgary, were fifth and sixth in qualification; and Simon d’Artois, Whistler, B.C., placed eighth (82.50) _ all advance to the finals.
HOCKEY
Women _ Captain Marie-Philip Poulin of Beauceville, Que., scored twice and assisted on the other to lead Canada to the gold medal with a 3-2 victory over the United States _` the third time she has scored the “golden-goal” to clinch the championship. Sarah Nurse, Hamilton, had the other goal and set a record for points scored during an Olympic tournament with 18 (5 g, 13 a) _ breaking the mark set by fellow Canadian Hayley Wickenheiser at Turin in 2006.
SPEED SKATING (LONG TRACK)
Women’s 1,000 _ Alexa Scott, Clandeboye, Man., placed 12th overall (1:15.79); and Maddison Pearman, Ponoka, Alta., was 26th (1:17.66).
