Men’s alpine combined _ James (Jack) Crawford, Whistler, B.C., won the bronze medal in a combined time of two minutes, 32.11 seconds _ his third top-six finish at these Games (fourth in the alpine and sixth, Super-G); Broderick Thompson, Whistler, B.C. (12:34.20) and Brodie Seger, North Vancouver, B.C. (2:35.03) were eighth and ninth overall; Trevor Philp, Calgary, was 19th in the downhill portion (1:46.84) but did not complete the slalom to rank tied for 17th.
CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING
Women’s 10-kilometre classic _ Dahria Beatty, Whitehorse, Yukon, placed 18th (30:00.2); Katherine Stewart-Jones, Chelsea, Que., was 36th (31:08.6); Cendrine Browne, Saint-Jérôme, Que., 48th (31.47.9); and Olivia Bouffard-Nesbitt, Morin Heights, Que., 61st (33:01.1)
CURLING
Women _ Canada (Jennifer Jones, Kaitlyn Lawes, Jocelyn Peterman, Dawn McEwen, all Winnipeg; and Lisa Weagle, Ottawa) opened the tournament with a 12-7 victory over South Korea.
Men _ Canada (Brad Gushue, St. John’s, N.L.; Mark Nichols, Labrador City, N.L.; Brett Gallant, Charlottetown; and Geoff Walker, Beaverlodge, Alta.) improved to 2-0 with a 6-5 win over Norway.
FIGURE SKATING
Men _ Keegan Messing, Girdwood, Alaska, placed 10th in the long program with a season-best 172.37 points and finished 11th overall for the event (265.61).
FREESTYLE SKIING
Mixed aerials _ Canada (Marion Thénault, Sherbrooke, Que.; Miha Fontaine, Lac-Beauport, Que.; and Lewis Irving, Quebec City) won the bronze medal (326.94).
Men’s Big Air _ Evan McEachran, Oakville, Ont., finished ninth overall with a score of 115.50.
HOCKEY
Men _ Ben Street of Coquitlam, B.C., who plays for Munich in the German league, scored a goal and an assist as Canada began their tournament with a 5-1 win over Germany.
LUGE
Men’s doubles _ Justin Snith, Calgary, and Tristan Walker, Cochrane, Alta., are ranked seventh after the opening two runs (1:57.918).
Mixed team relay _ Canada (Trinity Ellis, Pemberton, B.C.; Reid Watts, Whistler, B.C. Justin Snith, Calgary, and Tristan Walker, Cochrane, Alta.) placed sixth in the event with a combined time of 3:05.235.
SKELETON
Men’s individual _ Blake Enzie, Calgary, is ranked 19th with a combined time of 2:03.41 following the initial two runs.
SNOWBOARDING
Women’s half pipe _ Elizabeth Hosking of Longueuil, Que., was sixth in the final round with 79.25 points; Brooke D’Hondt, Calgary, was 10th (66.75).
Men’s snowboard cross _ Eliot Grondin, Sainte-Marie, Que., earned the silver medal (edged 0.02 seconds by the winner from Austria); Liam Moffatt, Truro, N.S., placed third in his 1/8 race (0.39 behind) and Kevin Hill, Vernon, B.C., was fourth in his heat (1.43) _ neither advanced to the quarter-final round.
SPEED SKATING (LONG TRACK)
Women’s 5,000 _ Isabelle Weidemann, Ottawa, won the silver medal (6:48.18) _ her second medal of these Games (bronze, 3,000).
DAILY RECORD
Canada tied it’s best-ever medal haul for a single day with four (two silver and two bronze) matching the accomplishment of 2006 in Turin, Italy (2S, 2B).
