What Bryan Gil did on his Valencia debut that will have impressed Antonio Conte at Tottenham

Bryan Gil may only have departed Tottenham on Monday evening but he has already made his debut for new club Valencia.

Limited to a total of 86 minutes across his nine Premier League appearances this season, Spurs decided that it was best for the Spaniard to head out on loan to help aid his development.

Tipped to return to his homeland of Spain last month in his quest to feature more regularly in the second part of the campaign, the 20-year-old signed on the dotted line with Valencia.

Training with his new teammates on Tuesday ahead of their Copa del Rey tie against Cadiz the following day, manager Jose Bordalas didn't hesitate to throw his new man into the starting XI.

Operating from the left wing for Los Che, Gil made an impact on proceedings after only four minutes as he earned a round of applause for his defensive work in the far corner of the pitch to help Valencia play their way out of a trouble.

Shifting across to the right flank with 11 minutes on the clock, the Spain international picked the ball up out wide and darted beyond four Cadiz players on the edge of the box before rather fortuitously finding a teammate despite slipping.

One criticism of Gil in his time at Tottenham so far has been that he needs to bulk up to cope with the demands of Premier League football, yet on his Valencia debut he was throwing himself about and more than doing his bit defensively to win the ball outside his own box.

Twenty-nine minutes into the contest the Spurs man managed to get the home faithful off their feet with a sublime piece of play in the corner to embarrass Raul Parra.

Twisting and turning his marker inside out as he looked to make his way into the box, Gil flicked the ball between the defender's legs and duly won a free-kick after he was brought down.

It was excellent play from the attacker and it duly saw him earn comparisons with former Valencia great Pablo Aimar.

Later going close with a powerful drive from outside the box that just went over David Gil's crossbar, he continued to wow after the break with some impressive work on the ball in the middle of the pitch.

Continuing to do his bit defensively, Gil almost played a pivotal role in Valencia going close to their second of the game after a magnificent reverse ball outside the box to set free Jose Gaya, who in turn saw his low cross across the face of goal snuffed out.

Valencia did end up sealing the win one minute later through Hugo Duro, with Gil playing a key role during his 90 minutes on the pitch to help his new team advance to the semi-finals of the competition.

As per Fotmob, Gil's stats from the contest were rather impressive as he completed all five of his dribbles, won nine of his duels, made five recoveries and one interception during his pitch time.

Manager Bordalas was clearly impressed by what he saw from the debutant and waxed lyrical about his new man after their cup victory.

"Bryan Gil is a difference maker. He was very excited and played really well," he explained. "He has trained very little with the team, but he was very good."

Gil was also happy with his start to life at the Mestalla and opened up on his debut and the welcome he has received from the fans.

"There's nothing better than debuting with a victory. It was a very hard-fought win. I think that we were very united and knew what to do when Cadiz equalised," he told Valencia's official website.

"I think that it was a very serious game, and it will be useful for the team to take a step forward.

"I want to thank the fans for how they've welcomed me from day one. I have felt loved from the start, and I thank them a lot."

Gil is also targeting a regular run in the team between now and the end of the season, something which wasn't the case for him at Tottenham.

"It's the coach who decides who plays," he added. "I wish that I played every game, but it's down to the coach and I will do everything possible to play in every game."

With Tottenham in action on Saturday evening against Brighton & Hove Albion in the FA Cup, Gil and Valencia will play the following day as they face Real Sociedad in La Liga.

A very impressive start to life in Valencia, Antonio Conte and Fabio Paratici will certainly have noted his performance as they plan for the future in N17.
