What Bruno Fernandes told Jurgen Klopp at full-time in Manchester United win vs Liverpool

Jurgen Klopp has played down a conversation with Bruno Fernandes following Manchester United’s 2-1 win over Liverpool on Monday evening.

The pair were seen exchanging words after the final whistle, which the German later revealed was about Lisandro Martinez ’s late altercation with Fabio Carvalho. The Argentina international went to ground following a coming together with the second-half substitute in stoppage time.

Klopp spoke with Fernandes - who put in a talismanic display - during the post-match handshakes about the incident. “It was not animated,” the Liverpool manager insisted, afterwards.

“It was the most harmless conversation I ever had, with a player who is as emotional as I maybe was! It was the situation with the centre-half, Martinez, when he went down with an ‘awful’ tackle [from Carvalho] which was obviously nothing.

“He [Fernandes] was talking to me and said ‘you would do the same’, but I said no, I cannot fall like this. It was all fine after the game, he told me he needs these kinds of conversations during the game and so I said fine, use me!"

Klopp admitted that United were the more sharper side on the night, but that Liverpool “should have won the game.” He added : “We didn't have enough power in the end.

"We're in a tricky situation injury-wise and that's how it is. We get through the week with 14 maybe 15 senior players available and we have to make sure no more gets injured.

“But even with our situation, I think if [we were] a little more convinced in what we do, we should have won this game. I know it sounds ridiculous, but that's how I see it. We lost it and we go again from here."
