What Britain thinks of immigration – 10 years on from the Brexit vote

  • A new poll by Merlin Strategy for The Independent reveals that 55 per cent of people desire a return to freedom of movement, with only 16 per cent opposing it, a decade after Britain 's vote to leave the European Union .
  • The survey, conducted on the ten-year anniversary of the Brexit vote, also found that almost two-thirds (62 per cent) of respondents believe immigration levels have deteriorated since Brexit, contrasting with just 8 per cent who think they have improved.
  • The polling indicates that 40 per cent of people would be more inclined to vote for a party pledging to rejoin the EU in the next election, while 24 per cent would be less likely, with this sentiment being particularly strong among Labour voters.
  • Despite public enthusiasm for rejoining, 50 per cent of those polled believe there are more pressing issues for the government to address than renegotiating Brexit, compared to 38 per cent who prioritise a closer relationship with the EU.
  • Former Labour leader Neil Kinnock stated that people are increasingly 'feeling the Brexit effects on pockets, purses, jobs and opportunities,' while Dr Mike Galsworthy noted a growing understanding of the 'unique benefits of Free Movement.'
