Mohamed Salah frustration clear as Pep Lijnders calms fuming Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson

Liverpool continued their quest for the quadruple by seeing off the threat of Inter Milan in the Champions League.

The Reds progressed 2-1 on aggregate in their round of 16 tie despite losing the second leg 1-0 at home to the Italian champions on Tuesday.

The result means Jurgen Klopp’s side have reached the last eight of the competition for the fourth time in five years despite just a third defeat in their last 53 games.

But there was plenty that went unnoticed or under the radar during the 90 minutes at Anfield.

Salah frustrated

Liverpool's inability to find the goal that would have spared some nerves was best summed up by the travails of Mohamed Salah.

Twice the Egyptian struck the post, first when really he should have scored, and then with a fine volley that was unfortunate not to find the target.

Late on he sensed another opportunity when Andy Robertson broke down the left with Salah completely unmarked in the middle, only to strike a defender and instead win a corner.

In the penalty area, Salah could be spotted flailing his arms and bouncing on the turf in sheer frustration. Just one of those nights, Mo.

Art of Vidal

Despite having not been in the Champions League knockout stages for 10 years, Inter still had a fair amount of experience in their line-up. None more so than Arturo Vidal, the former Juventus, Bayern Munich and Barcelona midfielder fast approaching his 36th year.

Vidal was popping up everywhere at Anfield, even if it was occasionally to foul somebody and get away with it.

However, the Chilean couldn't escape when, in first-half injury time, he went into the book for a foul on Curtis Jones.

Even Vidal's attempt to defuse the situation by hugging referee Antonio Mateu Lahoz, who he'd have known from his time at Camp Nou, failed to come off. Nice hair, though.

Lijnders the peacemaker

It was hardly the most brutal of matches. But with the stakes so high, tempers frayed inside Anfield at times.

Not least during the final quarter when Jordan Henderson and Ivan Perisic battled for a bouncing ball on the touchline, with the former winning possession before being bounced into by the latter.

The Liverpool skipper then turned to confront the Inter player before Pep Lijnders stepped in to intervene and keep the duo from clashing.

The Kop responded with a chant saluting Henderson. Such shows of defiance rarely pass unnoticed.

Antonio no-no

There was one thing that united Liverpool and Inter players, though - their disbelief at the performance of referee Antonio Mateu Lahoz.

Perhaps the worst should have been feared when the Spaniard trotted on to the field wearing a snazzy pair of black gloves.

But he wasn't the only official prompting curious looks from supporters, with the assistant referee in front of the Main Stand continually encroaching on to the field of play to wave his flag when he could be bothered to see fit.

Most officials are frustrated footballers at heart. Clearly he just wanted to be part of another Anfield European night.
