“What a player” - Patrice Evra names England star he wishes played for Manchester United

Patrice Evra said he wishes England star Jude Bellingham played for Manchester United.

Bellingham announced himself on the world stage during Monday's victory over Iran in Al Rayyan. The 19-year-old opened the scoring for the Three Lions in their first Group B game with a brilliant flicked header beyond the reach of Seyed Hosseini.

It was not just his goalscoring ability which impressed those watching earlier this week. He showcased his talents both defensively and creatively during a brilliant victory for Gareth Southgate's men.

Discussing England's chances at the World Cup with former teammate Rio Ferdinand, Evra admitted his admiration for the English teenager. "Rio to be honest with you I am not surprised by the start of England," the former United captain told the Vibe with Five YouTube channel.

"It is the first time that England start a competition where all the country didn't believe in them. Before they won that game they went like six games without winning and I feel the way the media criticises them and doesn't believe in them, it was a perfect reaction.

"But Rio, when you look at the players England have, and I will mention a player you love and I didn't have enough [time] to talk about, Bellingham. Rio come on, let's be serious, when I see this player playing for Dortmund, I wish he was playing for a club like United - what a player."

United have been interested in Bellingham for some time, including before he joined Borussia Dortmund. Back in 2020 while he was at Birmingham City, the teenager was given a tour of Carrington.

Bellingham would end up choosing the Bundesliga side but, with his World Cup performances drawing eyes to him, there seems to be a sense of inevitability that the midfielder will move on this summer, with a move to the Premier League a very real possibility.
