A homestead exemption can lower the property tax bill on your primary residence, but it does not make the tax bill disappear in a puff of bureaucratic smoke. Depending on the state and local rules, the exemption may reduce the taxable value of your home, lower the amount of tax owed, or provide another form of relief tied to owner-occupied property.
That last part matters because “homestead exemption” does not mean exactly the same thing everywhere. A homeowner in one state may receive a reduction in taxable value, while a homeowner elsewhere may receive a tax cap, a credit, or a different benefit entirely. The name sounds universal. The rules definitely are not.
