Rescue teams are battling to rescue a whale trapped in waters on the NSW Central Coast.
Marine Rescue NSW volunteers began helping NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service officers after the whale became entangled off Norah Head on Tuesday morning.
Two boats are en route alongside a whale disentanglement team to free the distressed whale.
Marine Rescue’s Courtney Greenslade says rescue efforts began following reports a whale was in distress off Soldiers Beach.
The whale is believed to be a humpback, according to multiple whale-watchers on the Whale Reports Central Coast community Facebook group.
“Can still see it with an orange buoy attached. Looks like a fishing boat following it,” Rosie Stout said.
“She is swimming really well but does have a buoy line or similar sort of thing dragging behind her,” Ash Hunter replied.
“Has another whale with her.”
In a separate incident on Saturday, a humpback whale was rescued from a series of lines and floats off Five Islands near Port Kembla.
Whale migration begins in May, when the mammals begin swimming north before starting their southbound journey in August.
The season peak occurs from June through to July.
