High street store WHSmith has been targeted by hackers, it has said. The bookshop and stationer said a cyber attack had seen company data accessed.
They said this incudes information about current and former employees.
It is understood that there is no effect on its business activities and that customer accounts are not affected. This is because these details are held on separate, unaffected systems.
An investigation has been launched. Specialist support services have been brought in and an incident response plan set in place. It added that all those affected are being notified.
In a statement to the City, it said: "WH Smith takes the issue of cyber security extremely seriously and investigations into the incident are ongoing. We are notifying all affected colleagues and have put measures in place to support them.
"There has been no impact on the trading activities of the Group. Our website, customer accounts and underlying customer databases are on separate systems that are unaffected by this incident."
