Diners who enjoy their breakfast at a Wetherspoon pub could find their meal looks a lot different. For a national shortage of eggs means that some branches of the chain are unable to include all the usual ingredients.
It has said the change is down to "temporary supply issues" after Avian flu impacted the production of eggs. Wetherspoon said its customers were being offered alternatives in the pubs where eggs were off the menu.
These include hash browns, sausages or onion rings. However it has so far not affected all pubs with some reporting it was business as usual.
Wetherspoon spokesman Eddie Gershon told The Sun: “We can confirm that there are temporary issues with egg supplies at some Wetherspoon pubs, due to the current impact of Avian flu on egg production.
“We are experiencing issues in receiving all the supplies we require to satisfy demand in every pub. This is not specific to Wetherspoon and other hospitality operators and supermarkets are facing similar issues.”
There have already been other warnings about the impact of bird flu. While some birds are being kept inside others have been culled at farmers try to keep the virus at bay.
Warnings over the availability of turkeys for Christmas have been sounded. Supermarkets have also voiced their concerns over the supply of eggs.
But it is not just bird flu which is having an impact. According to The Sun the market is facing a delayed knock-on impact from millions of birds dying during the summer’s heatwave.
