Wetherspoons customers have been left puzzled over the chain's seemingly random new prices - but there is actually a simple explanation behind it all. Regulars at the popular nationwide pub, which is known for it's cheap food and drink, were baffled to discover the new bizarre costs the menu, the Mirror reports.
One foodie TikToker from Paisley shared her own confusion in a video after a recent trip to a Wetherspoons restaurant while returning home from Glasgow. The vlogger was left confused as to whether or not she'd had too much to drink when she noticed the strange updated prices on the menu, such as a bowl of soup for £4.03 and a side of chilli for 81p.
The woman, who goes by @Brodies_bites_ on TikTok, questioned: "Can someone please explain what on Earth has happened to Wetherspoons prices? We went to Spoons on the way home from Glasgow the other night just to grab something to eat because we had been drinking and realised we hadn't actually eaten yet.
"The point of this video is because for the first time in ages we've been to Spoons and normally it's like £1.29 for coleslaw, £10.59 for a burger and a drink - what the hell is this? £4.03 for soup, £5.54 for nachos - like what? £5.27 for a panini and a drink - what is actually going on?
"It continues throughout the whole menu, such bizarre pricing and even the side dishes, it's 81p for a side of chilli and £4.03 for chips, like I just don't understand it."
Viewers in the comments agreed that the pricing was random and said they had noticed it too when they paid a visit to their local Wetherspoons. However, there is a pretty simple reason behind all of the confusion to explain why the prices have risen ever so slightly.
Last month, the chain, which runs 843 pubs in the UK and Ireland announced they would be increasing their prices by 7.5 per cent which adds on roughly 29p to the cost of every pint While the cost of a drink does vary by pub this means the average pint of Carlsberg is up from £2.39 to £2.57, Stella from £3.35 to £3.60 and Leffe from £3.85 to £4.14.
Pub chain spokesman, Eddie Gherson, told the Daily Star: “Wetherspoon has increased prices on food and drink by 7.5 percent. We believe that our prices are still very competitive in all the locations that we trade."
