'Westwood to Hollywood' quip from EK boxer as he prepares for Hydro bout

East Kilbride boxer David Jamieson has joked that he’s gone from Westwood to Hollywood as he prepares to defend his IBO Intercontinental title at the Hydro in Glasgow next month.

The 30-year-old takes on former English champion Dec Spelman at the Glasgow arena on Friday, May 13, on the undercard when WBA and IBO super welterweight champion Hannah Rankin defends her titles against Mexico’s Alejandra Ayala, and says it’s a tremendous opportunity.

Jamieson said: “It’s a great domestic opponent, so it’s going to give me a right good gauge on where I am and breaking into the top ten when I beat him.

“I’ve had my fights with journeymen but I’ve said to [promoter] Sam Kynoch in the last year that I would like to push on now, test where I am, see where I am and press on for titles.

“I’ve picked up the IBO, but that’s just a stepping stone for bigger and better things.

“I’m looking to get into the top ten in Britain and go for the British title. That has been the boyhood dream of mine, so it would be nice to take a step closer to that.

“It will be a good one for the fans, and it ticks another box. It will be another 10-rounder.”

Jamieson says fighting at the Hydro is a massive opportunity for everybody involved in the fight night and present a great chance to showcase their talent.

He said: “It’s a massive opportunity. To go from fighting in the Miners’ Welfare in Blantyre to the Hydro is Westwood to Hollywood stuff, isn’t it!

“It’s the sort of thing that boyhood dreams are made of – it doesn’t really get any bigger than that. Fighting in the biggest arena in Glasgow is brilliant.

“It’s a good undercard, all the guys who are there are lads that I came through the Scotland squad with and on the amateur set-up.

“For me, this is us breaking onto public shows, taking me from small-hall dinner shows where you’re having to sell tickets.

“This is an arena, with tickets going on TicketMaster, so that definitely takes the pressure off.

“It’s very positive, it’s a step in the right direction.”
