London journalists fume as EU anthem blares over Keir Starmer's speech

The National:

WESTMINSTER journalists were left fuming after Keir Starmer’s resignation speech was “ruined” by a protester blasting the EU anthem.

The media class really had their knitting ripped today when Sir Keith’s big podium moment was soundtracked by Steve Bray playing Ode to Joy over a loudspeaker .

Lewis Goodall, the school prefect off The News Agents, said: “Steve Bray blasting Ode to Joy, ruining nationally historic moments like this for us and posterity, is a complete disgrace. A yob.”

Tom McTague, the editor in chief of the New Statesman, added: “That we are forced to endure people blasting music over such moments of national significance is indicative of our wider problem.

“It is – quite obviously – preposterously antisocial and rude, but we just allow it to continue with a shrug as if there is nothing we can do about it.”

And an MP texted The Spectator’s Noa Hoffman to say: “Steve Bray should be sent to Guantanamo or a mental asylum.”

Meanwhile, alleged comedian Geoff Northcott chimed in: “Call me fusty – and I don't care if the PM is left or right wing – but I'd quite like the big moments in our countries [sic] life to happen without the intervention of some dickhead with a boombox.”

It might seem small, but you can bet your bottom dollar those calling for emergency measures to deal with the Steve Bray menace, and there are many, will be cheerleading for whatever new civil liberties crackdown when it rolls around.

National contributor Owen Jones makes the point well: “Steve Bray is a massive dickhead. He also has a legal right to be a massive dickhead.

“This country is increasingly authoritarian as it is. Anyone calling for even more crackdowns is a much bigger threat than the aforementioned massive dickhead.”
