West Midlands transport chiefs appoint tech firm for new app

A tech firm has been appointed to create a new app for West Midlands public transport users.

FOD Mobility Group has won the brief from Transport for West Midlands to design, develop and deliver the software which will cover the entire region and give commuters access to all transport modes in one place for the first time.

The aim is for the new app to enable travellers to plan journeys, receive live information, book and pay for all local transport options including buses, trains, trams, e-scooters, taxis and parking.

Transport for West Midlands said the appointment of Bradford-based FOD Mobility Group was the next step in its long-term goal of public transport users having a single app and account servicing everywhere they could want to go.

It will eventually replace the existing Transport for West Midlands app.

Other partners working on the launch of the new app include Brompton Bike Hire, Enterprise Rent-A-Car and ITO World which is providing transport data.

FOD Mobility Group's chief executive Justin Whitston said: "We are truly delighted to be working with Transport for West Midlands on what will be an exciting and scalable mobility-as-a-service project.

"We look forward to working long-term to deliver a new approach to travelling around the West Midlands."

Anne Shaw, executive director of Transport for West Midlands, added: "We are putting unprecedented investment into growing our metro, rail, bus and active travel networks.

"As well as developing travel modes, we need to look closely at how we can make accessing transport as seamless as possible through simple plan, book and pay mechanisms.

"This will encourage more people to use public and shared transport or active travel and reduce private car use. With this new mobility as a service platform we are looking to do just that.

"This will be a one-stop shop for anyone looking to travel around the West Midlands. We are delighted to bring FOD Mobility Group and other key partners on board to work on this exciting project."
