West Lothian disability charity awarded £3000 to transform garden for residents

Disability charity Leonard Cheshire, has been awarded a grant of £3000.

Leonard Cheshire empowers disabled people to live, learn and work as independently as they choose and their Pinewood service in Livingston provides a home for seven adults with learning and physical disabilities.

The service was awarded the cash from the B&Q foundation and it will be used for an accessible garden and patio, allowing the residents to enjoy the outdoors and share a meal.

The latest garden space further facilitates the charity’s aim in ensuring residents can be independent, healthy and active.

Claire Murray, deputy manager at Pinewood, said: “The funding from the B&Q Foundation allowed us to develop an accessible garden with, amongst other things, a patio and space for a barbecue, which enables our residents to spend quality time together outside enjoying the sights, smells and sounds of the outdoors - something that we at Leonard Cheshire believe everyone can and should be able to do.

“Our residents are also encouraged to spend time in the garden growing flowers and vegetables, providing an enjoyable opportunity for new skills development. After a long, difficult time stuck indoors during the pandemic, our residents are so glad to have a garden they can now fully enjoy.

“We are so thankful to the B&Q Foundation for their support.”

Paul Crisp, trustee of the B&Q Foundation, said: “At the B&Q Foundation, we believe everyone needs a place to feel at home. So, we’re putting our efforts behind local charities who share our vision – helping to create better, safer places for the people in our communities who need them most. Leonard Cheshire perfectly embodies these values, and it gives us all at the Foundation great pleasure to support them.”

The B&Q Foundation has awarded grants totalling over £3 million to charities across the UK since launching in June 2020. More grants are available, with information on how to apply for a B&Q Foundation grant available at https://bqfoundation.org.uk/
