West Lothian bowlers put on fine show to take home medal haul from 2022 Scotland National Championships

West Lothian bowlers put on a fine showing at the 2022 Bowls Scotland National Championships, with four teams returning home with medals.

The Winchburgh duo of Paula Preston and Lindsey Kirkwood won bronze in the Ladies Pairs, while it was the same in the Men’s Triples for the Linlithgow’s Andrew Cruickshanks, Derek Logie and Gary Orr.

In the Youth Triples there was a silver medal for Ruairidh Mann, Kyle Logan and James Dunnett of Kirkliston, but the region’s greatest success was reserved for Buchan Park who won gold in the Ladies Fours thanks to a 22-11 victory over Alloa East End.

The team got things up and running defeating Stamperland 16-13 before reaching the quarter-finals with a 19-16 win over Dalkeith.

An 18-8 win over Abbey secured a semi-final berth where it went down to the wire against Aberlady, with Buchan Park winning 16-15 to reach the final where they were eventually crowned Scottish champions.

The Kirkliston Youth Triples team picked up six wins from six to top Section A and set-up a semi-final with Springside where they ran out 8-3 winners.

The first three ends in the final against Blantyre went back and forth with Kirkliston conceding three in the first but taking two shots in both of the next two to open up a 4-3 lead. Unfortunately, it was Blantyre the rest of the way with a 6-0 run over the next three ends securing the title.

Linlithgow’s Men’s Triples side secured a 10-9 win over Burnside, then beat Parkside 15-4 before a 19-11 last-eight win over Arbroath.

The semi-final would be a step too far as they lost 16-7 loss to eventual winners Polmuir.

It was also semi-final defeat for Winchburgh in the Ladies Pairs as they picked up bronze medals.

They beat Bainfield 14-13 and Balornock 20-18 in the quarter-final.

A less stressful 19-11 win over Cupar was sandwiched in between those two results.

In the semis, they were beaten 20-10 by Bridge of Allan, who went on to beat St Fergus 20-19 in a thrilling final.
