West Lothian athletes get ready to compete today as Commonwealth Games kick-off

The Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games kicked-off last night with the Opening Ceremony and some of West Lothian's 10 athletes are straight into action today, while it's a busy weekend ahead with potential medals on the horizon over the next few days.

Fauldhouse boxer Reese Lynch is considered a medal hopeful in the lightwelterweight category and the 21-year-old is in action today with a first round bout against Timon Aaree of Kiribati (12noon).

Should be safely navigate that clash, his next bout is on Sunday with a quarter-final berth on the line.

Livingston-born Keanna MacInnes is part of a very strong women's swimming squad and she gets her Commonwealth Games up and running today with the 100m butterfly. The heats get underway just after 12 noon and should she successfully navigate those, the semi-finals are this evening just before 9pm with the final at the same time on Saturday.

She has a potentially busy weekend coming up with the heats of the 50m butterfly taking place on Sunday morning (11am) and the semi-finals scheduled for 7.15pm later that day.

Fellow swimmer Emma Russell, also born in Livingston, will see plenty of the pool over the Games as she's competing in six different events. Her Games get underway on Saturday with the 50m freestyle heats in the morning with the semi-finals and 4x100m freestyle relay in the evening session.

On Sunday, it's the 4x200m freestyle relay and a potential 50m freestyle final.

Craig Benson is competing in his third Games with his first race coming tomorrow morning with the 100m breaststroke heats just after 11am and, hopefully, the semi-finals at 8pm.

West Lothian Artistic Gymnastics ace Cameron Lynn is in the individual qualifiers today, aiming to be part of the all-around final which takes place tomorrow while the individual apparatus finals are on Monday and Tuesday.

Shannon Archer is part of the Team Scotland squad competing in the team event tomorrow, which also doubles up as the qualification round for the individual events set for Monday and Tuesday.

Team Scotland's netball side, which features Livingston-born Rachel Conway, get their Group A fixtures up and running on Saturday against Australia (12 noon) before taking on Wales at 6pm on Sunday.

West Lothian's remaining athletes - Alice Aitchison (weightlifting), Colin Dalgleish (table tennis) and Sarah Inglis (athletics) have to wait until next week for their competitions to get underway.
