A brilliant late volley from Benjamin Sesko secured a point for Manchester United in a tense Premier League clash against West Ham at the London Stadium.
Neither side was able to take control of the game in a first half that was tepid and pedestrian throughout, though the visitors went closest as Luke Shaw’s effort from a corner routine was cleared off the line by Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
But it was the hosts who took the initiative in the second half and struck first, Tomas Soucek darting in between the defenders to tap home Jarrod Bowen’s cross.
Michael Carrick’s side toiled as they searched for an equaliser, with Casemiro having an equaliser ruled out for offside, and they were lucky not to fall two behind late on as the Hammers cut them open with two counter-attacks, United only saved by two brilliant interventions from Leny Yoro.
And those two late tackles proved pivotal for the visitors as Sesko volleyed in Bryan Mbeumo’s cross in the final minute of added time, securing an undeserved point for United as Carrick’s side stay in fourth.

Cole Palmer’s horror miss calls time on Chelsea’s honeymoon period with Liam Rosenior after Leeds collapse
23:50 , Chris WilsonAlso relevant for Man Utd’s push for the top five this term...
Cole Palmer’s face said it all. His mouth agasp in utter disbelief, the 94th-minute open-goal miss of the weekend’s hat-trick hero perhaps signalled the end of Liam Rosenior’s honeymoon period is over. And once more, it’s against Leeds United where fortunes change for a Chelsea manager.
Before the visit of Daniel Farke’s men, Rosenior’s early career at the Stamford Bridge helm consisted of seven wins in nine games, only suffering defeat in Chelsea’s two Carabao Cup semi-final legs against quadruple-chasing Arsenal. His impressive record had admittedly been aided by a favourable run of league fixtures, with his only top-half opponents coming in the form of Brentford in mid-January. But considering the backlash from a portion of the fanbase following his appointment, alarm bells were yet to really sound on BlueCo’s pick.

Nicky Butt praises change in Manchester United mindset as he backs old club for top four
23:40 , Chris WilsonFormer Manchester United midfielder Nicky Butt has backed the club to finish in the top four this season while praising the team’s new “mindset”, after a brilliant Benjamin Sesko volley secured a late draw against West Ham.
United conceded first in the second half and while the Red Devils toiled for large parts as the Hammers threatened to score on the counter, their efforts paid off in the end as Sesko volleyed in a superb equaliser in the 96th minute.
It was a point that kept their top-four charge on track after Chelsea’s draw to Leeds at Stamford Bridge, with United now two points behind third-placed Aston Villa, who face Brighton tomorrow.

Man United spurn chance for five wins in a row as fan’s viral haircut challenge goes on
23:20 , Chris WilsonA Manchester United supporter has missed out on the chance for a first haircut in 500 days after the team spurned the chance to seal a fifth consecutive victory.
Frank Illett, 29, vowed in October 2024 that he would not cut his hair until the club won five games in a row but United’s struggles last season led to a longer wait than he anticipated, and resulted in a comically overgrown barnet.
His daily video updates on ‘The United Strand’ have accumulated millions of views - while Ilett planned to donate his hair to The Princess Trust, a charity that provides wigs to young cancer patients dealing with hair loss as a result of their treatment.

Nuno: 'We should be proud'
23:15 , Chris WilsonWest Ham boss Nuno Espirito Santo had the following to say to BBC Match of the Day:
“[We’re] disappointed, all of us are to get this in the end. We had a good game, the boys worked hard but today it was not to be.
"It is a draw that gives us sadness but the way we competed today was really good.
"It is a mix of everything - the need that we have and the work from the boys today deserved so much more.
"We should be proud and this is the way, we must compete in every game like this.
"We should keep the standards, I said that to the boys and their faces are of a job well done. They hurt and it is painful.
"You look back to the game and it is always the final moments that you think you almost got across the line but then get a big punch in the stomach. It is painful,” he added.
Next up
23:10 , Chris WilsonWest Ham’s next game comes in the FA Cup this weeked, with the Hammers facing Burton away on Saturday before hosting Bournemouth a week later.
Man Utd don’t play again until Monday 23 February, when they face Everton away.
Sesko: 'We are working together'
23:05 , Chris Wilson“I’m happy with my finish but not so happy with the draw,” says Benjamin Sesko on TNT.
“I know we deserved the win, we were fighting, Unfortunately, days come where you’re a bit unlucky, maybe the intensity wasn’t where it should be. But in the end we get a draw, which is important.
“We are working together, no matter what is happening, you’re always fighting. Today it was important to get a draw, it was a difficult game for us, they were dangerous on the counter, but we managed to finish it at 1-1.
“We feel amazing. When difficult moments come we stick together and it can lead to results like right now. We just have to keep on going, we have to take care in every single situation, every second of the game, and when the chance come finish them,” he added.

Manchester United take big silver lining from first Michael Carrick blip at West Ham
22:57 , Chris WilsonMichael Carrick just about keeps his unbeaten record going, but most significant might be how that comes from Benjamin Sesko really picking up speed. Certainly in terms of form, but there’s also a crucial poise to the Manchester United forward’s game.
Because this latest important finish, this time in the 96th minute to follow that in the 98th against Fulham, required supreme presence of mind and technique. Sesko deftly touched in a late cross, to divert the points and secure a 1-1 draw against West Ham United.
That is likely to have some consequence on the Champions League places, but the effect on the bottom might be greater.

Carrick: 'We definitely weren’t at our best'
22:48 , Chris Wilson“We were okay, we definitely weren’t at our best,” says Man Utd boss Michael Carrick after full-time.
“A little bit frustrated, we’ve had five games at a really good level, but its a tough place to come, they made it really difficult.
“But credit to the boys, a big late goal when we needed it, it’s a great quality to have. We’ll take the point and move on.”
He calls the goal a “fantastic finish”, adding that Sesko has “done it again”.
“It’s important we threw everything at it, probably could’ve put a few more balls in the box, Josh [Zirkee] had a chance, but a great finish from Benji [Sesko], delighted for him again and a great step.
“Listen, from where we are and being here a short time, we’ve obviously had big highs, and there are times it doesn’t go to plan and you’ve got to take what you can.
“Tonight we found a way to take a point and we’ll move on and take some positives,” he added.

'A sublime finish from Benjamin Sesko'

“It was a sublime finish from Benjamin Sesko. He was actually outside the near post as well to get his toe to whip it into the top corner – it was something special.
“He looks as if he has gained a lot of confidence from having Michael Carrick in charge. He looks a different player,” she added.

Man United fan Frank Ilett’s haircut challenge makes me smile, says Michael Carrick, as 18-month saga finally nears end
19:40 , Chris WilsonMichael Carrick said he is smiling at the thought his Manchester United side could give a supporter his first haircut since 2024, but he vowed he will not pile pressure on his players by mentioning it before they face West Ham on Tuesday.
United supporter Frank Ilett vowed in October 2024 that he would not get his hair cut until United won five games in a row.
That was when Erik ten Hag was still in charge but during Ruben Amorim’s troubled reign, United’s best run was of three consecutive victories as Ilett ended up with a huge mop of hair.

The Manchester United fan one win away from first haircut in 500 days
19:30 , Chris Wilson“Do it for Frank” is unlikely to form part of Michael Carrick’s team talk as Manchester United head to West Ham this evening. But perhaps it should. It is clear that when fan Frank Ilett vowed not to cut his hair until his team had won five games in a row, he did not expect to be approaching 500 days without stepping into a barber’s, or for his look to have grown quite so ridiculous, or to have accumulated more social media followers than some Manchester United first-team players. After four consecutive wins, though, he is extremely close to his self-inflicted ordeal finally being over.

Nuno: 'They're in a good moment'

“We have been able to put more bodies in the box. We are achieving better combinations in the final third and we have been scoring. The players that have come in have been giving a big boost to help the team,” he explained on his side’s new-found attacking threat.
"To score you have to get it in the box and shoot. We dare our players to try things and challenge themselves - because with risk comes rewards,” he added.
On United, he added: "They're in a good moment. You can see the players are going to be confident and it's going to be tough. They have a lot of talented players."
"We look at many things for Manchester United, but Bruno Fernandes is definitely one we need to look out for. He's a fantastic player and I have a big admiration for Bruno."

19:08 , Will CastleMichael Carrick is going with the ‘if it ain’t broken, don’t fix it’ approach and once again does not change his side from the previous outing, which saw Man United comfortably beat Tottenham.

West Ham remain without suspended Jean-Clair Todibo and injured goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski, with Chelsea loanee Axel Disasi set for his home bow.
United have no new injury concerns, with Matthijs de Ligt, Mason Mount and Patrick Dorgu still the only players sidelined.
Carrick: 'We've got a lot to fight for'
18:40 , Chris WilsonHere’s what Man Utd interim boss Michael Carrick had to say on his side and tonight’s opponents:
"We do seem to be a team that can cause a lot of problems and create opportunities and score goals, so it's definitely getting the balance right. There's still things to improve on, it's definitely something we've focused on, trying to be better as a team collectively when we don't have the ball,” said the former midfielder on his side and keeping clean sheets.
He added that West Ham will be “fighting” for a result, but explained: “So are we. We've got a lot to fight for, so you'd like to think that balances out in some ways and it's who can come out on top at the end of it, but sure, we're totally aware of what we're going into on Tuesday night and how difficult it will be."

It took Carrick’s overall record as United boss to six wins in seven matches – after a three-game spell in 2021 – and Fernandes revealed what he told his current boss four years ago.

Luckless Thomas Frank rues what might have been as Bryan Mbeumo punishes Spurs
18:10 , Richard JollyAnd here’s the report from United’s 2-0 win over Spurs, courtesy of Richsrd Jolly:
Thomas Frank may have been vindicated. Sadly for him, he was beaten in the process. Under Frank, Bryan Mbeumo scored 20 Premier League goals for Brentford last season. When the Dane joined Tottenham, he hoped to lure Mbeumo across London with him.
Instead, Mbeumo joined Manchester United, and with a certain inevitability, he, along with Bruno Fernandes, duly scored in their 2-0 victory over Spurs. He has struck home and away against Tottenham this season. Spurs also targeted Eberechi Eze, who went to Arsenal and got a hat-trick against them. That may be the story of Frank’s Tottenham, a tale of what might have been. A defeat shaped by the first-half red card of his captain, Cristian Romero, for a lunge at Casemiro, worsened his plight. Frank’s detractors may suggest he is hapless. He can certainly look luckless.

Scott Parker and Burnley’s woes go on as West Ham secure important victory
18:00 , Chris WilsonHere’s the report from West Ham’s win over Burnley at the weekend...
West Ham moved to within three points of safety and pushed Burnley a step closer to relegation with a 2-0 win that saw sections of the Turf Moor crowd turn on Scott Parker.
Crysencio Summerville scored for a fifth straight game 13 minutes in and when Taty Castellanos doubled the lead 13 minutes later, it felt like game over not just for the afternoon, but for Burnley’s season as a whole as they were left 11 points adrift of 17th place.
Without a win in 16 league matches – one shy of a club record that dates from 1889-90 – Burnley could not take advantage of a home fixture against a West Ham side who travelled north with only one win in their last 10 on the road, but who left within touching distance of Nottingham Forest.

West Ham vs Man Utd live
17:32 , Chris WilsonMichael Carrick will look to continue his dream start as interim Manchester United boss as his side travels to West Ham seeking a fifth win on the bounce.
United comfortably dispatched Tottenham Hotspur on the weekend, with goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Bruno Fernandes seeing off Thomas Frank’s struggling Spurs.
Carrick will now face another of his former teams as he takes on the club he came through as a youth player, but will need to be wary with relegation-threatened West Ham beginning to show they can indeed make a great escape.
The Hammers have won three of their last four games in all competitions, easing the pressure on Nuno Espirito Santo who has closed the gap from safety to just two points.
