West Ham transfer news: Mads Hermansen fighting for place amid January exit links

Mads Hermansen is fighting for his place at West Ham despite being linked with a move away from the club in January.

Standard Sport understands that the Danish goalkeeper, who only joined the Hammers from Leicester in an £18million deal in the summer, is the subject of loan interest from a number of clubs in England and Europe.

However, despite a lack of minutes this season, Hermansen could yet compete to regain the starting role from rival Alphonse Areola.

Hermansen began the season as West Ham’s first-choice goalkeeper following his move from Leicester, arriving at the club at the same time as Casper Ankergren, his former coach at Brondby.

Since Ankergren’s departure, which came shortly after Nuno Espirito Santo arrived as head coach to succeed the sacked Graham Potter, Hermansen has fallen out of favour.

He made his first start since September on Sunday as West Ham beat London rivals QPR 2-1 after extra time in the FA Cup third round, looking more assured and comfortable.

Hermansen is currently the understudy to Areola, but could force his way back into the reckoning under Nuno, given relegation-threatened West Ham’s poor defensive record - the Hammers are yet to keep a single clean sheet under the Portuguese coach.

Despite a series of errors plaguing his start to life in east London, Hermansen remains the only goalkeeper in West Ham’s ranks to have kept a clean sheet so far this season.

With a contract lasting until 2030, he is not targeting a permanent departure from the London Stadium.
