West Ham send 16-word Ashley Westwood message after Burnley star suffers gruesome injury

West Ham United have sent their collective best wishes to Burnley midfielder Ashley Westwood after he suffered a graphic injury in the weekend’s Premier League showdown. The Clarets' star was on the end of what was an unfortunate challenge from Hammers' attacker Nikola Vlasic.

The tackle - completely unintentional - appeared to deal some damage to Westwood with the game having been stopped for a considerable amount of time, whilst he was then withdrawn on a stretcher. The incident left Vlasic in tears whilst Westwood received treatment.

Whilst it remains to be seen how long Westwood will be out of action for, the Hammers have already sent their well wishes to the Burnley midfielder with a short message on Twitter.

They said: “Sending our best wishes to Ashley Westwood after his injury today. Good luck with your recovery.”

The game was certainly overshadowed by the serious injury picked up by the Burnley man, and it appears to have hampered the Hammers as they looked to take a step towards the Champions League places. Wout Weghorst had given the Clarets the lead at the London Stadium, whilst Maxwel Cornet had a great opportunity to double their lead from the penalty spot but fired his effort off-target.

Czech midfielder Tomas Soucek was on hand to equalise for David Moyes' men, though. As a result, they now sit seventh and five points behind fourth-placed Spurs - albeit with a game in-hand. They face a big clash next weekend with a trip to Stamford Bridge to take on London rivals Chelsea.

Goalscorer Soucek though sent his thoughts to Westwood after the injury. Speaking after the game, he said: "It was a horrible injury and I just hope Westwood feels very good, very soon. I just wish him all the best."
