West Ham’s Lukasz Fabianski could require surgery after horror Nottingham Forest injury

West Ham United goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski could require surgery after fracturing his cheekbone and eye-socket during Saturday’s 4-0 win over Nottingham Forest.

The 37-year-old, who has started all 24 of the Hammers ’ Premier League matches this season and is in the final months of his current contract, was forced off in the second half of the win at the London Stadium after being caught by the leg of Brazilian defender Felipe, with Frenchman Alphonse Areola replacing him.

Fabianski could now be forced to undergo surgery following the nasty facial injury that left him with swelling after Saturday’s game, with Moyes admitting he did not know yet whether or not he will undergo surgery.

“[He’s] got a fractured cheekbone and an eye-socket,” said Moyes. “We don’t quite know whether it’ll be operated on or healing itself, or a time-span at the moment.”

Moyes added: "I’m waiting, I couldn’t give you an answer, we’ve had the surgeons report back but I think there’s a decision to make as to whether it’s surgery or natural healing. We think that he’s fractured his cheekbone and eye-socket.

"Huge for us and obviously huge for the goalkeeper as well. The stage of the career for him as well."

That injury will keep Fabianski out of contention for Wednesday night’s FA Cup fifth round tie against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Another player who will miss the game is right-back Vladimir Coufal, who came off at half-time with a heel injury, while striker Danny Ings is cup tied.

“Vladimir Coufal has got a heel injury which will keep him out, so I think that’s really the two injuries we had from the weekend,” added Moyes.

“Apart from that, the squad is just about where it was. Danny Ings is cup tied obviously.”
