West Ham handed fresh Gent selection blow as trio walk suspension tightrope for second leg tie

West Ham United centre-back Angelo Ogbonna will miss the Europa Conference League quarter-final second leg clash with Gent next Thursday.

The experienced Hammers centre-back picked up his third European booking of the season (from the group stage onwards) on Thursday night following a first half foul on Gift Orban in the 1-1 draw, meaning as per UEFA laws, Ogbonna has been handed a one-match suspension and will miss the second leg against the Buffalos through the suspension.

UEFA’s yellow card suspension laws state that players who receive three bookings between the start of the group stage and the end of the quarter-finals will receive a one-match ban. The same applies for five and seven yellow cards.

Midfielder Flynn Downes has already served a suspension for three cautions but the Brentwood-born midfielder was given a fourth in Gent on Thursday night, making him one of three players walking a suspension tightrope for the second leg.

Right-back Vladimir Coufal was shown a yellow card in the second half, his second of the season in Europe, making him one away from a suspension. Downes and Coufal join young striker Divin Mubama that are close to a ban, with the 18-year-old an unused substitute in Belgium.

A number of other West Ham players in Europe have one yellow card this season. However, they are not at risk of a suspension due to the rule coming to an end for the season after the second leg against Gent.

Should West Ham progress, they will face either Anderlecht (Belgium) or AZ Alkmaar (Netherlands) in the semi-finals.

Following their first leg on Tuesday night in Belgium, Anderlecht have a 2-0 advantage going into their second leg in the Netherlands.
