West Ham goalkeeper could be in line for international chance after Tottenham injury blow

West Ham United goalkeeper Alphonse Areola may be in line to add to his total of international caps this month after an injury blow to Tottenham Hotspur’s Hugo Lloris.

The Hammers ’ second-choice stopper, whose four starts this season have all come in the Europa Conference League, is currently on international duty with the French national squad for their Nations League fixtures with Austria and Denmark on Thursday and Sunday respectively.

While Areola has been in France’s squad regularly for the last four years, he has played just three times, featuring as an unused substitute 51 times for his country.

However, France and Spurs captain Lloris has withdrawn from the French squad for this week’s matches, with Nantes’ Alban Lafont taking his place.

With Lafont uncapped, it leaves French boss Didier Deschamps forced to decide between AC Milan’s Mike Maignan and Areola for meetings with Austria and Denmark.

Also dropping out of the squad through injury is AC Milan left-back Theo Hernandez, who has been replaced by Aston Villa’s Lucas Digne. Former Villa midfielder Jordan Veretout has also replaced current Villa man Boubacar Kamara, just a day after Kamara replaced Juventus’ Adrien Rabiot in Deschamps’ squad.
