Man, 57, dies in Gent train collision after West Ham Europa Conference League clash

A 57-year-old man has died in the Belgian city of Gent after being hit by a train following Thursday night’s Europa Conference League fixture involving West Ham.

The man, who has not been confirmed as a West Ham fan, had been in attendance at the 1-1 draw at the Ghelamco Arena but was involved in a fatal train accident at Gent’s Sint-Pieters station.

After being rushed to hospital by emergency services, the 57-year-old was pronounced dead by doctors.

The prosecutor's office in East Flanders described it as an “unfortunate incident.” Train services were disrupted in the area before resuming to normality at around 3am local time.

In the game, Danny Ings’ first half goal gave West Ham a 1-0 lead on the edge of half-time before Hugo Cuypers levelled the score at 1-1.

The two sides meet in the second leg of their quarter-final next Thursday at the London Stadium.
