West Ham defender linked with transfer exit and Dimitri Payet reunion amid uncertain future

West Ham United defender Angelo Ogbonna has been linked with transfer interest from Ligue 1 side Marseille in the upcoming January transfer window.

The experienced Italian centre-back is currently set to leave West Ham at the end of the season with his contract currently expiring at the end of June 2023 and has recently been linked with a return to his home country, with both Lecce and Frosinone linked with interest in the former Juventus defender.

However, reports from La Gazzetta Express have now said that Ogbonna is of interest from French side Marseille and have even suggested that West Ham could let the 34-year-old leave his contract early in order for West Ham to save on paying his wages. Spotrac claim that Ogbonna earns £70,000.

A move to Marseille would see Ogbonna link up with former West Ham teammate and playmaker Dimitri Payet, who has spent almost six years with since leaving the London Stadium in January 2017.

Ogbonna is currently one of the most experienced players in David Moyes’ squad but has only made two Premier League appearances this season, both of which have come off the bench.

The Italian, who earlier this season recovered from a long-term knee injury, has made ten appearances this season, seven of which have come in the Europa Conference League where he has captained the Hammers four times this season.

Moyes however may be reluctant to let Ogbonna go this winter. Centre-backs Kurt Zouma and Nayef Aguerd currently have respective knee and groin injuries, while Craig Dawson’s future is unclear having almost joined Wolverhampton Wanderers in the summer.

Since joining West Ham from Juventus in July 2015, Ogbonna has made 212 club appearances in all competitions, scoring 13 goals.
