West Ham: David Moyes set for January talks over new contract

David Moyes will hold talks over a new West Ham contract next month amid growing expectation he will extend his stay at the club.

Moyes marked the fourth anniversary of his return to east London with a 2-0 victory at Arsenal last night that sees his side climb back into the Premier League’s top six.

The Scot is due to be out of contract at the end of the season and at one stage early in the campaign it appeared unlikely he would be offered a new deal amid calls from supporters for a younger, more progressive manager to take the helm.

However, the club’s board always planned to address Moyes’s future during the second half of the season and having reached the midway stage of the Premier League campaign with a record points tally, it is now expected that the 60-year-old will be offered a new deal.

Speaking after Thursday’s victory at the Emirates, Moyes said: “We are getting ready to talk. We will get it done. I don’t see many problems about it.”

Moyes came close to the sack on more than one occasion last season as the Hammers battled relegation until late in the campaign, but ultimately survived to deliver Europa Conference League success and end the club’s 43-year trophy drought.

That triumph secured a third successive season in European competition and Moyes’s men are already safely through to the last-16 of this term’s Europa League, having qualified as group winners.

Moyes’s case has been strengthened by a run of superb victories against the Premier League’s top sides this term, with Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham having been toppled.

The Irons boss has also overseen the rebuilding of his side following the £105million sale of Declan Rice to Arsenal, with reinvestment of that money in the signings of Mohammed Kudus, James Ward-Prowse and Edson Alvarez considered a major success.
