West Ham co-owner David Sullivan has been advised to stay away from the club’s home games following an investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct.
A spokesperson for London Stadium has told Standard Sport that they have “recommended” to West Ham that Sullivan does not attend the club’s home games due to concerns over potential fan unrest.
They added that while they understand West Ham do not consider there to be an ongoing safeguarding risk regarding Sullivan’s attendance at the London Stadium, they have asked for “advance notice of any planned attendance so that appropriate safety and operational measures can be put in place.”
The London Stadium’s recommendations come after a joint investigation by Panorama and the Sunday Times revealed seven women had accused the billionaire businessman of sexually exploitative and predatory behaviour over multiple decades. Sullivan categorically denies the allegations.
It was subsequently revealed that Sullivan was also banned from contact with West Ham’s women’s and youth teams for three years due to safeguarding concerns.
The ban came following an historic allegation over his conduct. Sullivan denies any wrongdoing, but said in a statement that he accepted the “meaningless restriction, as it didn't impact on my work in any way” and “accepted it for a quiet life.”
Sullivan’s time in charge of West Ham has not been without controversy, and many supporters took part in a season-long campaign of protests last year calling for Sullivan and former vice-chairman Karren Brady to step down.
Despite the protests, Sullivan remained a regular attendee at the London Stadium last season as West Ham failed to avoid relegation to the Championship.
He is also expected to defy the London Stadium’s recommendation not to attend home fixtures this season.
“Following media reports at the end of the season regarding a safeguarding matter being managed by the club, London Stadium sought further information to ensure it could fulfil its own safeguarding responsibilities,” a spokesperson for London Stadium told Standard Sport.
“Based on the information provided by the club, we understand the matter was investigated and that the club does not consider there to be an ongoing safeguarding risk associated with Mr Sullivan attending the stadium.
“However, given the potential for demonstrations and anti-social behaviour by some spectators, we have recommended to the club that he does not attend. We have also requested advance notice of any planned attendance so that appropriate safety and operational measures can be put in place.
“For operational reasons we will not comment on if we have had notice that he will attend.”
