Saving an ancient monument situated at a quarry in Milton will be a key focus for councillors elected later in the week.
Earlier this year it was revealed that the demolition of the historic monument at Sheephill Quarry now “seemed likely” according to West Dunbartonshire councillors whose refusal of an application to expand the quarry had been appealed.
The council’s planning committee had previously rejected plans to expand the quarry in Milton and increase opening hours following concerns about the impact the proposals would have on the environment and neighbouring properties.
This included concerns that the work would result in the destruction of what remained of Sheephill Quarry fort, an ancient iron age hillfort within the quarry grounds.
As well as the outlying villages of Milton and Bowling, the ward covers most of the town of Dumbarton, Silverton, Kirktonhill, Brucehill and Castlehill. The northern parts of Dumbarton including Bellsmyre, Broadmeadow and Lomondgate which are assigned to the Leven ward.
