A dementia friendly housing development is on the cards for Old Kilpatrick as West Dunbartonshire Council announce their plans for more affordable homes.
The new homes in Mount Pleasant will be similar to the 22 new flats and bungalows in Alexandria’s Creveul Court, which feature glazed doors in kitchen cupboards so residents can clearly see what is kept inside.
Also included in the properties are traditional hot and cold taps rather than mixers and contrasting colours used on doors and between walls and floors.
During Wednesday’s housing and communities committee, Labour councillor Gail Casey asked for more information about the Mount Pleasant development and Creveul Court.
She said: “Do we know what kind of housing we would be planning to put into Mount Pleasant? What is Creveul Court?”
It is hoped that the Old Kilpatrick development will be similar and feature communal gardens with sensory planting, sheltered spaces for gardening and relaxing.
John Kerr, housing and development and homelessness manager, said: “Creveul Court is a development in the town centre of Alexandria. It is an amenity housing area, which is dementia friendly.
“Our housing needs profile for Old Kilpatrick would suggest a gap in terms of provision for the older population and people who are seeking to be housed there.
“It is not going to be a lift and lay in terms of the design for Creveul Court but we are hoping to introduce the three key elements in terms of amenity housing making it dementia friendly with a community garden.
“We will adopt a holistic lifestyle there for them but we are not talking about a six story block of flats but a mixed development like Creveul Court which has flats as well as bungalows.
“The good things in Creveul Court, we would be hoping to replicate in Mount Pleasant.”
