West Dunbartonshire classroom doors to remain in one piece as covid cases 'static'

The bottom of classroom doors in West Dunbartonshire will not be cut off to improve ventilation in local schools, it has been confirmed.

An update on Covid-19 infections across the area was brought before elected members at the most recent full council meeting where it was highlighted that coronavirus cases continue to remain fairly static despite a rise in cases due to the Omicron variant before Christmas.

Chief Executive Joyce White told councillors that while covid rates in the area remain low, the ongoing pandemic continues to present challenges to the council.

During the meeting questions were asked about ventilation in schools and how the local authority intended to deal with that.

Labour councillor Lawrence O’Neil said: “To avoid any misunderstandings that may have been alluded to in the Scottish parliament by many folk, do we at West Dunbartonshire have any plans to cut the bottom off any doors in our schools to improve ventilation?

“That is not a flippant question. I would like to know if we have a plan in place that meets health and safety requirements of the Scottish Government and that of fire and rescue services to maintain our buildings, as a safe measure both in terms of fire security and covid?”

Councillor O’Neil was informed by the Depute Provost councillor Karen Conghan that there were no plans to cut the bottoms off classroom doors.

This was confirmed by senior education officer Laura Mason. She said: “No we haven’t adjusted any of our doors and have no plans to do so. The monitoring to date is that there are no concerning levels of CO2 in any of our establishments.

“It is great that we have got all the monitors that our staff are able to look at daily and all processes are being followed.”
