Around 30 firms operating in the West Country are attending a sustainability-themed careers event at South Gloucestershire and Stroud College.
The expo, which is taking place across Thursday and Friday this week (March 2-3) at the education institute, is being held at the college's WISE Campus in Filton, to showcase opportunities for young people and for its students to make contacts with employers in the region.
John Walker, head of careers at SGS College, said: “As part of our ‘professional futures’ strategy, the careers expo…will give 1,200 of our level 3 students the chance to have meaningful encounters with 16 Universities and up to 30 local companies.
“Whilst they discuss university course choices, work experience, summer jobs and apprenticeships with the experts, students will enter a challenge to make the event ‘Carbon Net Zero’.
“They will pledge a personal action around food, clothing or travel which has a carbon credit, that offsets or exceeds the carbon emissions of the event. This innovative approach will encourage a can-do attitude in students, that small life decisions and bigger career choices can make a positive difference.”
The initiative is a joint venture with the office of local MP, Jack Lopresti, which helped to organise the event.
Mr Lopresti, said: “I have been working with SGS College to help organise the Careers Expo 2023 which offers a fantastic opportunity for students to interact with employers and apprenticeship providers, and universities. The event will be all about students’ potential prospects and what they can be doing to give themselves the best possible start in their chosen careers.
“I am delighted to support SGS College which offers a model for education and shows great results in supporting technical education and guiding people into thriving industries and valued careers”.
SGS College, which has pledged to transition to carbon neutral operations by 2030 , formally opened a new campus during this year’s National Apprenticeship Week.
Based within one mile of the education institute’s current Filton Campus, the facility - named SGS Horizon -will specialise in the training of construction apprentices.
