West Coast confirm McGovern's ribs broken

West Coast have confirmed defender Jeremy McGovern broke his ribs in their AFL loss to Geelong. (AAP)

West Coast defender Jeremy McGovern will spend a second night in hospital with broken ribs.

McGovern was hurt in a second-quarter collision with Geelong forward Jeremy Cameron during the Eagles' 18-point defeat at Optus Stadium on Saturday.

The All-Australian backman was substituted out of the contest and taken to Royal Perth Hospital for assessment.

West Coast on Sunday confirmed McGovern has broken ribs but did not put a timeline on the 30-year-old's return.

"McGovern is receiving the best care and is in a stable condition," a club statement said.

"He is unable to receive visitors but is expected to be released from hospital tomorrow.

"The club requests privacy for Jeremy at this time and will make no further statement until more details become available."

Speaking after Saturday's loss, Eagles coach Adam Simpson feared the worst.

"He's had plenty of knocks over his time and he's pretty brave," Simson said.

"He plays hurt all the time, so for him not to get up, he's pretty sore.

"A lot of guys play with broken or fractured ribs.

"He's done it plenty of times before, but it looked like a pretty bad one."

West Coast host Essendon at Optus Stadium on Friday night, when they will be seeking to snap a club-worst nine-game losing streak.
