KOLKATA: The Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC), falling under West Bengal's North 24 Parganas, sewerage and drainage department officials, led by MMIC (drainage and solid waste management) Debraj Chakraborty, held a pre-monsoon preparation meeting.
The meeting — which was held with BMC Borough II comprising a large area of Baguiati and Rajarhat from ward 8 to 13 where there was severe waterlogging last year — discussed the necessary measures that should be taken before the coming monsoon.
Chakraborty said that it was discussed with the borough officials and councilors as to where the drainage lines need to be cleaned in advance and where the electrical lines and diesel operated pump sets will need to be operated in case of heavy rains among other measures.
“A pre-monsoon cleaning drive of the drainage lines will be taken up where it is needed. We will soon hold a follow-up meeting with irrigation and PWD officials where the issues will be addressed for their assistance so that we could be prepared before the monsoons,” Chakraborty said.
Every year during heavy rains, many areas of Kalabagan, Narayanpur, Jatragachi and Baguiati get severely waterlogged due to the clogged drains and the canals’ incapacity to flush out excess stormwater.
