KOLKATA: A 22-year-old woman set herself on fire along with her three-year-old daughter at Mondalpara in Maheshtala on Tuesday morning. The woman and the child later succumbed to burn injuries at a hospital. Cops have detained her husband for questioning.
The woman was married to a cloth merchant seven years ago. Around 9am on Tuesday, the woman went to her bedroom with her two children and then poured kerosene and set herself on fire. While the woman's elder daughter (5) managed to get out of the room, the younger one remained inside.
The child's grandmother raised an alarm and neighbours rushed to the spot. They rescued the mother-daughter duo and took them to MR Bangur Hospital where they died later. The victim's kin alleged that she used to be tortured by her husband when he was drunk.
