West Belfast walking group using message of togetherness to raise awareness for important causes

A walking group which was started on the lead up to a West Belfast man's 50th birthday has grown in size and achievement.

The 50 to 50 group has championed local charities for the last two years after successfully raising money and awareness for DeterMND.

DeterMND was been established on behalf of the late Anto Finnegan, former Antrim Gaelic football captain, after he was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (MND) in August 2012.

Seeing the benefits of walking and talking, in terms of boosting mental health and raising awareness for good causes, the 50 to 50 group is continuing their work each week.

Last year, they supported Sands, Eimear's Wish, Pretty in Pink, Darkness into Light, Nuala's Walk and more.

Gerard told Belfast Live of their plans for 2022.

"Awareness of these great charities is key for the group and we have big plans for this year," he said.

"We'll be starting off with a Walk for Sepsis which has been inspired by people who have been affected by it, whether it's they have had it themselves, or known someone affected. We're encouraging anyone who wants to, to get involved.

"For the month of March we'll be meeting Monday to Friday at 6pm at Andersonstown Leisure Centre, Saturday at Colin Glen Parkrun, to walk, and then Sunday at 10.30am from the leisure centre again.

"We'll also be heading to the North Coast as part of the Sepsis awareness, to walk from Ballintoy to Bushmills."
